CONGRATULATIONS JOY FOR WINNING The Prestigious Roxy ASP Women's World Championships and becoming the first Hawaiian female World Longboard Champion! July 16, 2008
Right after I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, my family packed up and moved to the mainland for seven years. Fortunately, we moved back home just before my eighth birthday, which is when I got into surfing. I spent a lot of summers with my three sisters surfing the breaks in Waikiki and hanging with the beach boys. The summer before my freshman year of high school, I decided to start competing. I really loved the challenge of pushing myself to be the best and enjoyed surfing good waves with only a few girls out.
Seven years later, I still enjoy good competition, but now just do a select few throughout the year. With support from my sponsors and family, I have been fortunate enough to travel to surf some of the best waves in the world: Tavarua, Fiji; Bali, Indonesia; Australia (Noosa and the Gold Coast); Costa Rica; Mexico; and parts of California. I am currently a part-time student at Brigham Young University Hawaii (in Laie, NE side of Oahu) not sure what I'm majoring in yet. I feel very blessed to have grown up in such a beautiful place, surrounded by the ocean and to be apart of the culture and live the lifestyle that surfing has to offer.
Ten years later, I still enjoy good competition, but now I just do a select few throughout the year. With support from my sponsors (and family, I have been fortunate enough to travel to surf some of the best waves in the world: Tavarua, Fiji; Bali, Indonesia; Australia; Costa Rica; Mexico; France; and parts of California. I am currently a full time student at Brigham Young University in Provo, UT. I'm majoring in accounting and have about a year left. December of 06 I married my high-school sweet-heart, Drew Monahan. I have loved every minute of my married life and am so excited to one day start a family with him. I feel very blessed to have grown up in such a beautiful place, surrounded by the ocean and to be apart of the culture and live the lifestyle that surfing has to offer.
