Biarritz, France.(July, 2008)Congratulations Joy Monahan, the new ASP Women’s Longboard Champion!
Joy Monahan, Toes on the Nose team rider and the pride of Aina Haina, Oahu, traveled to Biarritz, France to win the 2008 ASP Women’s World Longboard title!
Her surfing, as always, was fantastic. Joy is a full time student at Brigham Young University in Utah. She only had a few days available to practice in California before crossing the Atlantic. Once there Joy made the most of it! She defeated many of the world’s best women to become Hawaii’s first female ASP longboard champion.
Everyone at Toes on the Nose is very proud of Joy’s accomplishments. It’s great to see her amazing surfing talent rewarded.
We were able to catch up with the busy twenty-two year old student / athlete after her return to Hawaii and asked her to fill us in on some of the details of her life.
Toes on the Nose: Hello Joy. How do you like to spend the day when you’re home in Hawaii?
Joy: “On a really good day I’ll usually wake up around 8AM, eat a little something and either go surfing or go to the gym. Come back, eat lunch and do whatever I didn’t do in the morning.”
Toes: How did you learn to surf?
Joy: “My dad taught me when I was around eight years old. He first started taking my three sisters and me to Diamond Head, but his coworker told him Waikiki might be a little “friendlier” to his girls. I got hooked right away and grew up spending all my summer days down in Waikiki surfing with my sisters and hanging with the beach boys.”
Toes: Who are your surfing inspirations?
Joy: “Bonga Perkins, Lisa Anderson, Kelly Slater, and Rell Sunn.”
Toes: Who makes your surfboards?
Joy: “Guy Takayama. He makes the best boards in the world!”
Toes: How many boards do you have?
Joy: “I own around 15, or so, boards, long boards and short boards, so I have a pretty good variety to choose from.”
Toes: What’s your favorite meal?
Joy: “That’s a tough one. It depends on who’s cooking. I love everything my mom grills on the BBQ, my grandma’s saimin, and my sister’s pizza, and my mother-in-law’s chocolate Texas sheet cake.”
Toes: What are your favorite Toes on the Nose clothes?
Joy: “I love their board shorts and rash guards. They are cute, comfortable, stylish and perfect for surfing!
Thank you, Joy. We are excited for you and wish you continued success and happiness.
