Lindsay Steinriede
Being born and raised in Dana Point, California it should not come as a surprise that I grew up at the beach. My father taught me how to surf when I was 7 years old, ad I have loved it ever since. A few years later I found a second home at Doheny where me and the other jetty rats would spend endless hours surfing, jumping off the jetty, skating the wall, and plenty of wrestling matches on the grass. I started competing with the DLSA when I was 12 and quickly realized how much fun it was to spend the weekends at different beaches with friends from all over California. However surfing was not the only sport I was competing in.
I attended Dana Hills High School and was on the Volleyball, Soccer, Surf, and Track and Field teams. While it was a lot of work and commitment it was all worth it in the end. I was the 02-03 South Coast League’s Athlete of the year, made the school’s athlete’s hall of fame, and got a soccer scholarship to UCSB. By this time I had started competing at a professional level in surfing, but I quickly found out that college and soccer were going to take up most of my time. Thus, I competed in the big surf competitions when I could, and managed to stay in the top 4 over the next three years. My greatest surf achievement came in 2006 when I won the ASP Women’s United States Championships at the Roxy Jam Cardiff. I have followed this up with other great finishes, but mostly love to compete because of all the great places around the world competitions take you.
I have obtained a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and am working toward my Master’s degree in Physical Education. I recently married the man of my dreams, Ryan Engle, who just happens to shape insane boards as well. A couple other highlights in my life right now are coaching the Saddleback Jr. college surf team with my father and continuing to compete in contests around the world. I plan on eventually becoming a soccer and surf coach while teaching other sports classes at a Jr. college, because who wouldn’t want to play all day and have summers off?
